Computing

“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world” (David Warlick)

At Hazeldown, we use a scheme called Teach Computing, which has been developed by NCCE (National Centre for Computing Education) and funded by DFE (Department for Education).

Children should:

  • understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation

  • analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems

  • evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems

  • become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.

Why teach it?

To ensure that our pupils understand how ICT can be used to assist within everyday life, from word processing, communicating with other people and researching to gain a greater understanding. As well as these, ICT has deep links with mathematics, science and design technology. Also, internet safety will be taught giving the children advice and understanding on how the internet can unfortunately be an unsafe place.

Through our high-quality ICT education, we aim to help pupils to gain a coherent knowledge of different devices and programs available to help them improve as a learner. Building on knowledge from other subjects the aim is for children to become digital literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
